The Ultimate Guide to Redefining Success: Everything You Need to Finally Feel Fulfilled

I remember sitting in my car.. staring at the steering wheel for twenty minutes before walking into work. I had the title. I had the salary. I had the "success" that everyone told me I should want.

But I felt like a complete fraud.

I’ll be honest.. I spent most of those mornings wondering if I was just broken. I’d look at my coworkers, people who seemed genuinely excited about quarterly projections and board meetings, and I’d think, What is wrong with me? Why isn't this enough?

I thought that if I just worked a little harder, or got that next promotion, the empty feeling in my chest would finally go away. It didn’t. In fact, the more "successful" I became by society’s standards, the more disconnected I felt from the person I actually was.

I was living in the prison of should, and I didn't even know I held the keys.

If you’re reading this, maybe you’re there too. Maybe you’re checking all the boxes but the math still isn't adding up to "happy."

Redefining success isn't about giving up on your ambition. It’s about finally pointing that ambition toward something that actually matters to you. Let’s talk about how we get there using the four pillars: Clarity, Courage, Authenticity, and Purpose.

The moment I realized my 'dream' was actually a cage

For years, my definition of success was basically just a list of things I thought would make my parents or my peers proud. It was all about the external metrics, the title on the LinkedIn profile, the number in the bank account, the visible signs of "making it."

But the problem with external success is that it’s a moving target. You hit the goal, you feel a five-minute rush of dopamine, and then you’re already looking for the next hit. It’s a frenzy.

I realized I didn't have any Clarity. Not clarity about what I was doing — I had plenty of that. Clarity about why. I was just running because everyone else was running. I had to stop and ask myself some really uncomfortable questions.. questions that most of us are too busy to face.

Moriates Coaching 4 Questions Framework

When I started using my 4 Questions Framework, everything started to shift. I had to look at my decisions and ask: Is this move aligned with my core values, or am I just afraid of looking like a failure?

Usually, the answer was the latter. That realization sucked. It’s not fun to admit you’ve spent a decade building a life you don't even like. But that clarity, that raw, sometimes painful honesty, is the only thing that can set you free.

What are you currently chasing because you think you should, rather than because you actually want it?

Why I had to burn down the pedestal I built

Once you have clarity, you usually realize you need to change something. And that’s where most people get stuck. Because change requires Courage.

I’ll be the first to tell you.. I was terrified. I was a "successful" professional. To walk away from that, or even to just pivot slightly, felt like I was failing. I was so wrapped up in the chaos that I forgot that courage isn't the absence of fear. It’s acting even when you’re sweating through your shirt.

I had to find the courage to stop people-pleasing. I had to stop caring if my old colleagues thought I’d lost my mind. To stop measuring my worth by the opinions of people whose opinions I didn't actually respect.

Redefining success means stepping away from comparison. It means realizing that if your goal doesn't give you the freedom to be present with the people you love, it might not be a goal worth having. I had to learn to embrace "freedom over frenzy."

For me, success started looking like a slow Tuesday morning with a cup of coffee and no "urgent" emails, not a high-pressure meeting where I had to pretend to be someone I wasn't.

Are you brave enough to be "unsuccessful" in the eyes of people you don't even like?

Trading the 'Perfect Professional' for the Real Me

The biggest energy leak in my life was the gap between who I was at the office and who I was at home. At the office, I was the "Expert." I was polished. I was always "on." At home, I was exhausted, irritable, and completely drained.

That’s what happens when you lack Authenticity. You’re performing a role. And let me tell you.. the costume is heavy.

To truly redefine success, you have to start valuing truth over approval. You have to be your whole self in every room you walk into. I know that sounds simple. In reality, it's messy. It means saying no to opportunities that look great on paper but feel wrong in your gut. It means being honest about your limits — even when that honesty disappoints people.

Closing the Gap Between Your Two Selves

When I started closing the gap between my two selves, my energy changed. I wasn't spending 80% of my brainpower trying to maintain a facade. I could finally use that energy to actually live.

Success isn't about achieving perfection; it’s about accepting your quirks, your natural rhythms, and your actual needs. It’s about building a career that fits your personality, not trying to twist your personality to fit a job description.

Where are you still wearing a mask just to feel "successful"?

Building a life that actually fits, not just looks good

Finally, we get to Purpose. And I’m not talking about some grand, "save the world" kind of purpose (unless that’s your thing). I’m talking about finding your purpose in the daily impact you make and the way your work resonates with your deepest values.

When you redefine success, your metrics change.

Instead of "How much did I make this month?" you start asking:

  • "How much freedom did I have today?"

  • "Did I act with integrity?"

  • "Was I able to help someone else move forward?"

  • "Do I feel energized or depleted?"

For me, purpose meant becoming a coach. It meant taking all the mess and the confusion I’ve felt and using it to help others find their way out of the same woods. It wasn't a straight line: there were plenty of days I sat at my desk playing video games just to avoid the reality that I was starting over: but it was my line.

I stopped expecting the world to give me a gold star and started giving myself permission to live intentionally. That’s what intentional living is all about. It’s the shift from being a passenger in your own life to being the driver.

How to start your own redefinition

You don't have to quit your job tomorrow (unless you really want to.. in which case, let’s talk). But you do have to start being honest with yourself. You do have to start asking the questions most people spend decades avoiding.

What's blocking you? What stories have you inherited that don't actually belong to you? What would your life look like if you stopped optimizing for other people's approval?

If you’re feeling that "stuck" feeling, I highly recommend looking into the ELI Assessment. It’s basically a mirror for your energy. It shows you exactly where you’re holding yourself back and helps you find the clarity you need to start moving toward a version of success that actually feels like you.

Success isn't a destination. It’s not a paycheck. It’s the feeling of waking up and knowing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, doing exactly what you were meant to do, as exactly who you are.

So, I'll leave you with this.. if you stripped away your job title, your salary, and everyone else’s expectations of you.. what would be left?

And is that person happy?

If you're ready to find out — I'd love to help you get there. Reach out and let's talk about what your next chapter actually looks like.
